Sentenced to be a hero (2026) Review

Sentenced to be a hero or “Yûsha-kei ni Shosu Chôbatsu Yûsha 9004-tai Keimu Kiroku” is a brand new anime that came out on 3rd January 2026. A surprise entry in the already jam-packed anime season of 2026. I read a synopsis, and it had me intrigued, so as anyone would, I gave it a watch. Does the show live up to my intrigue tho?

The Concept

The concept of this show is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Heroes are normally celebrated in society; they are decorated and respected. This is the concept of almost every show but Sentenced to be a hero flips the script completely. In this world, heroes are the lowest of the lows, being a hero in this world is a punishment. One doesn’t voluntarily choose to be a hero; they are chosen and after that they are basically immortal and no matter how many time they die, they will be brought back to life just so they can keep fighting. I personally thought that it is a clever spin on the concept and can’t wait to see it explored further in the upcoming episodes.

Action & Animation

The action in this show is premium & doesn’t hold back any punches. It is up there with the anime we regard as having great action like chainsaw man, JJK or Solo leveling. There are certain rules and powers in the show but they haven’t been explored yet, would love to see more of it. There are also demons in the show which are not explained when it comes to their origins or motives. So far so good.

The Plot

There isn’t much to the plot yet; the show mainly focuses on one character. They did define that character quite thoroughly and give us some sneak peek into his motives and his odd behavior. There is a hint of setting up some bad guys but again very slightly. I am gonna keep this part intentionally vague as I think in depth spoiler discussion can be more valuable once the whole season is concluded. But what I have seen so far does look promising for the future.

Verdict

Based on what I’ve seen so far of “Sentenced to Be a Hero” aka “Yûsha-kei ni Shosu Chôbatsu Yûsha 9004-tai Keimu Kiroku”, I’m confident in the show. I have not read the source material and will be watching it without context to give only anime-based reviews of future episodes. I would say that since it is a new idea with good execution, animation and action, any anime fan should give it a shot.

Parental Guideline: So far the show is children friendly but it does have fighting and action, so choose accordingly. Otherwise wait for every episode to come out because it will be easier to judge then.
